2011 Farmers’ Market: The Basics

Speakers will include . . .
· Jesse Richardson (Virginia Tech) discussing liability issues and selecting the right coverage.
o Local insurance agents will host display booths and be available to talk with participants.
· Joe Fabrizio (VDACS) discussing regulatory issues.
o VDACS offering to certify scales for farmers’ market vendors. (Please indicate that you are bringing your scale when you register.)
· Karleigh Huff (Virginia Tech Food Sciences Department) outlining the issues of safe food.
· Carrie Denny (Spencer Penn Center ) sharing the story of a community kitchen.
· Judy Berger (Jefferson Board for the Aging) and Stephanie Anderegg-Maloy (Charlottesville Market) discussing how to expand sales and customer base.
· Theresa Nartea (Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia State ) exciting us with ideas for marketing.
· Libby Oliver (Williamsburg Market) and Josie Showalter (Harrisonburg Market) defining their markets successes and challenges.

The program will focus on liability issues and selecting the right liability coverage, regulations and inspections governing food-based businesses and farmers’ markets, processing and certified/community kitchens, using electronic payment for expanding sales and the customer base, and marketing strategies. You will have an opportunity to talk with other vendors and farmers’ market managers. Program speakers include representatives from the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Virginia Cooperative Extension, Virginia Tech, Virginia State University , and area farmers’ markets.
Participants are encouraged to bring their scales and complete the certification process by VDACS. However, you must indicate that you want your scales to be certified when you register for the conference.
