Greetings from Smith Mountain Lake ! Due to requests from various parts of the state, I wanted to share with you brochures for programs we are offering later this fall. Please feel free to forward them to your localities if your 4-H Center isn’t offering one of these already. Attached are the brochures for the following programs (see brochures for full descriptions):
1. Fall Cloverbud Camp: November 6-7, open to campers (with or without a parent) ages 5-8. Trained teens and adults are needed as well. (teens would arrive Nov 5).
2. Fall Teen Weekend: Nov 19-21, open to teens ages 14-18. Due to popular demand, this is the 3rd consecutive year we’re offering this particular program…”The Real World: SML” (Smith Mountain Lake ). The weekend is centered on real-world experiences for teens…they have “jobs” (workshops…and are paid for them using “Skelton Bucks”), pay “bills” (rent, utilities), pay for their meals, pay for their recreational activities, etc. This has been a highly successful program thus far. Adult volunteers will be needed.
In addition to these 2 weekend camps we’ll be hosting a Hunter’s Education Camp at some point later this fall. I’m in the process of finalizing the dates with the folks at DGIF, but basic details include: open to youth ages 9-18. In cooperation with the DGIF, this program will feature the DGIF’s new online hunter’s education course (it’s actually a “hybrid” online course…4 hours online, 6 hours classroom) AND round robin rotations featuring hands-on live-fire with archery, .22 rifles, and shotgun (skeet shooting). We will need teen and adult volunteers as well. As soon as the details are finalized (any day now) I’ll post the brochure on our website (http://www.skelton4hcenter.org/). Under “programs”, there is a “Specialty Camps” tab…the brochure will be found in the top right corner of that page.
If you would like the “publisher” file for any of these (so that you can add Unit-specific information) please let me know. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to contact Chris Smith, Associate Center Director, W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center, 775 Hermitage Road, Wirtz, Virginia 24184
