The State Farm Good Neighbor Scholarship Program was established to provide financial assistance to high school seniors who plan to attend college, technical, or vocational school, but may not be able to meet the expenses of a higher education without such aid and often do not qualify for other scholarships.

Governor's School for Agriculture is Accepting Applications

As you are probably aware, Virginia Tech provides leadership to the Virginia Summer Residential Governor's School for Agriculture! The program has been a rousing success since 2001 and especially in 2011! The students who attend the Governor's School for Agriculture will be treated to a world-class experience. They will be working one-on-one with some of the most talented and respected scientists and professors in the world! This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime for many youngsters.

The Governor's School for Agriculture is intended for gifted and talented youngsters. They must apply through their high school Gifted Education Coordinator and acceptance will be on a competitive basis. Admission will be limited to rising juniors and seniors. The upcoming summer class is scheduled for June 24-July 21, 2012.

The Virginia Department of Education posted application packets for the Summer Residential Governor’s School Program on their website. The deadline for local schools to select their nominees will be just after the beginning of next year but check with your local school system as each school division handles the application process differently.

National 4H Youth Science Day 2011-10-05

26 Prince William County youth visited the National 4-H Youth Conference Center on Oct. 5th, 2011 to participate in the National Youth Science Day experiment Wired for Wind.

The 4-H National Youth Science Day gives youth across the country an opportunity to have a hands on experience about a current science topic. This year's experiment was created to help young people understand the import link between energy, the environment and their community. It will demonstrate how implementing alternatives to traditional energy production can have a positive impact on communities and ecosystems.

FALL FESTIVAL AT OCCOQUAN BAY NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE

Woodbridge – On October 1, the Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge will be the scene of the second annual Fall Festival sponsored by the Friends of the Potomac River Refuges. Special guests will include native plants, birds, butterflies and other wildlife. There is no admission charge and all activities are free!

There will be a kids activity area, reptile and raptor experts, a hayride tour of the refuge, a wildlife photography workshop, a monarch butterfly exhibit, and many other activities and hands-on exhibits for the whole family to enjoy. There will also be a native plant sale, with proceeds going to support FOPRR.

With an emphasis on demonstrating to people how close nature and wildlife are, many Fall Festival activities will reveal that many of the plants and animals in the wild can be established or attracted to their own backyards. For example, native plantings will attract birds and butterflies and bring enjoyment to homeowners.

“This incredible place is not far from your own neighborhood,” said Linda Johnston, president of the Friends group. “Bring your cameras and curiosity to learn about nature and celebrate the outdoors.”

Learn about species diversity in the refuges of the Potomac River. For example, the Occoquan Bay NWR has over 700 species of plants, 241 species of birds, 75 species of butterflies and hundreds of other species of wildlife.

The 2010 Fall Festival was a success with hundreds in attendance. Johnston wants to repeat this success as her group builds support for all three of the local Potomac River refuges. The other two refuges are the Elizabeth Hartwell Mason Neck NWR and the Featherstone NWR.

“The Fall Festival is an opportunity for the whole family to enjoy nature,” said Johnston, “and the price is right!”

Holiday Lake 4-H Educational Center has partnered with the Virginia Waterfowlers Association and the Outdoor Education Division of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries to offer the first of its kind Virginia Waterfowlers Weekend. This weekend held at the 4-H Center is open to any person 12 -90+ and focuses on improving skills related to the safe hunting of waterfowl. The workshops include:

Volunteer at the Prince William Forest Park!

Prince William Forest Park continues to celebrate their 75th anniversary by putting on fun events. Volunteer opportunites are many!

The 11th annual Chopawamsic Cycle Challenge
Sunday, September 11th
10 volunteers are needed to help out. Volunteers need to be 16 years or older and be able to work on their own for periods of 30 minutes to one hour. Volunteers will be controlling the traffic of riders. Two or three volunteers will be taking pictures of the event from several points on the course. Volunteers need to arrive at the Pine Grove Ball Field at 8am for the briefing and to get positioned on the course before the 9am start. They will be provided with orange vests to make sure they are visible to participants and park regulars. They will finish at noon. Volunteers will be provided lunch! National Public Lands Day
Saturday, September 24th
Even at the Oak Ridge Campground. Volunteers will rehab many different areas of the campground including painting and staining sheds and signs,installing fire rings, cleaning up camp sites, etc. The event will take place from 8-12 and lunch will be provided by REI.

Event at Cabin Camp 3 . This event celebrates the history of Prince William Forest Park with live demonstrations, music, kids activities and much more.

2011 Southern Region 4-H Teen Leadership Conference

The 6^th annual 4-H SRTLC will be held at the Clyde York 4-H Center in Crossville, TN. This conference, designed for 4-H youth ages 14 - 18, will be held on October 13 – 16, 2011. SRTLC will provide teens with opportunities in leadership development, civic engagement, youth/adult partnerships and youth voice. This action packed weekend has been a huge success in the past, and we look for another great conference this year. This conference is being hosted by Tennessee 4-H Youth Development and Kentucky 4-H Youth Development.

Hi all,

Well we made it through an amazing event! We couldn’t have made it happen without your expertise, time and endurance of the weatherJ. Thank you too for your patience and flexibility as we made this event a reality.

Please see the summary of check in and the re-enactment from the horse perspective below:

68 volunteers contributed their over 600 hours of time and expertise to assist with check in of horses for the 150^th Civil War re-enactment event over a three day period. These volunteers were affiliated with Virginia Cooperative Extension-Prince William Master Gardeners or 4H, Prince William Soil and Water Conservation District, Nokesville Horse Society, Haymarket Veterinary Service or horse savvy people within the community.
260 horses of the 375 expected were checked in either at Catharpin Park or at Pageland Farm. All owners provided the necessary documentation, a negative Coggins report, for the entry to the event. Each horse received a numbered tag confirming their entry. Tags were worn on bridles/halters during the event.
Cavalry re-enactors were in tune with the needs of their horse(s), ensuring their safety and health. Horses were kept in the shade and had sufficient water and hay supplies.
On Saturday and Sunday, Haymarket Equine Veterinarian, Dr. Jess Williamson, her staff, the Virginia Tech Equine Ambulance, led by John Dashiell and his staff, and the Prince William County F&R Technical Large Animal Emergency Response Team assisted six volunteers for on site horse assistance and medical response. These people provided troughs with ice water and sponges for re-enactors to cool their horses as they returned from the re-enactment. Calvary commanders were notified of this and all re-enactors expressed their appreciation for our assistance and concern for their horses’ health.
During the two day re-enactment, five horses were cooled with cold water and ice bags for high body temperature and one for colic. One horse was kicked by another but no treatment was required. Two horses were reported as runaways on the farm, but were secured quickly.
As a result of this experience, Prince William County and Virginia Cooperative Extension in Prince William are better prepared to assist with future events that involve horses as well as have more defined resources to provide assistance and emergency response to the local horse community.

To get the price of $5.50 on July 30th 4-H members, leaders and families need to let their county 4-H agent know how many tickets they need and the agent is to call the group sales office at the number on the flyer and reserve that many tickets in advance. Your group leader can pay for the tickets that day when they pick up their tickets at the groups sales office at the visitor’s center. You can’t get the reduced price unless the tickets are ordered in advance. It is written in small print at the bottom of the flyer.

If you can’t make it for July 30th they are offering a discounted price of $7.50 until the end of December to 4-H families. Again they have to be ordered in advance through the extension office. For counties without a 4-H agent Avil said they would need to contact a neighboring county agent to get the tickets ordered for them.

Girl Scout Gold Makes Butterfly Project a Reality at Weems

In June, Rachel Higgins will finish launching a project that will bring her one step closer to earning Girl Scouting’s highest achievement, the Gold Award. The 16-year-old Osbourn High School student’s project – a courtyard butterfly garden at Weems Elementary School in the City of Manassas – has already captured the imagination of the school’s future scientists.

Originally, the garden was the brainstorm of Weems art teacher LeeAnn Brannon, whose quest to find public grant money was turned down. In stepped community volunteer, Jill Spall. Spall’s Community Advisory and School Engagement Group (CASE) works to connect city public schools with the community at large. Her goal is to form partnerships that will take on stalled educational projects and make them happen. Jill connected Brannon with the Higgins family, including Jack, Arlene and their daughter, Rachel.

“It was perfect. I love Weems,” says Rachel. “I was a student there for six years. It was a project ready to adopt, and I would be giving back.”

Rachel submitted her proposal, based on Brannon’s idea, to the Girl Scout Council of the National Capital Area (GSCNC). The project would meet both the requirements of the Gold Award process and the school’s standards of learning objectives. Their joint goal was to transform a bare, unused courtyard into a colorful mini-laboratory for environmental science, citizen science, butterfly biology, identification, habitats and monitoring. After several revisions, reported Diana Pethtel, Membership Development Specialist for Association 90 at GSCNC’s Manassas office, Rachel’s project was approved.

Rachel solicited support from local businesses and individuals. She formed a garden construction crew that involved members of her Senior/Cadette Troop 1379 and beyond. She also volunteered after school to teach Weems science club members what she learned through the resources of Prince William 4-H and Project Butterfly WINGS – that butterflies are the best way to begin to study the world of insects because they aren’t strange or threatening. In fact, many scientists began their careers with an interest in butterflies.

“Besides the butterfly garden, the courtyard now has an herb garden planted by the science club, a water fountain, a rock garden and sand sculpture, an arbor, and various other plants,” says Rachel. “The students can study real plants. The herbs can be used in cooking and to learn about the senses. It also gives a beautiful place for learning and to inspire creativity.”

The garden was unveiled during the Weems Art Fair on May 23. Students were excited to show off their garden to their parents. Proceeds from the fair purchased picnic tables for the courtyard. Additional donations are welcome.

“Most of the plants are perennials and should return, year after year,” added Arlene Higgins. “We hope the Weems community continues to care for the garden, and Rachel’s committed to being a part of that.”

Rachel’s summer adventure is attending a USDA-sponsored Veterinary Ag-Discovery program at Fort Valley State University in Georgia, June 20-July 1. Jill Spall is winding down two other CASE projects.

“Our goal is to continue to help public schools find wider success by partnering with the community,” said Spall.

Care Packages Assembled at Nokesville 4-H Meeting

On Friday evening, May 13th, 33 care packages were assembled to be sent to Tuscaloosa, AL. These packaged are hoped to provide to relief to some of the victims of the devasting tornado that ripped through the local comunity. The Nokesville 4-H club gathered donated items and assembled the packages at their monthly meeting. Over 30 youth were in attendance along with members of the Prince William County 4-H staff, 4-H Advisory council, perspecitve 4-H leaders and Brentsville District Supervisor, Wally Covington.
Donations are still being taken at the collection box at the Nokesville Church of the Brethern until May 22nd, or at the 4-H office until Friday, May 20th.

Nokesville 4-H Invites the 4-H Community to Help Assemble Care Packages for the Tuscaloosa, AL Tornado Victims

A single tornado that moved through Tuscaloosa and Birmingham, AL on April 27, 2011 took hundreds of lives and displaced thousands of families. This tornado was reportedly more than a mile wide at times.Initial estimates have rated this as a rare EF-5 tornado with wind speeds well over 200 mph and it will possibly go down in history as the most powerful tornado ever recorded. That would surpass the Oklahoma City (Moore) tornado of 1999.The Tuscaloosa/Birmingham Tornado may have also set a new length of track record with an estimated path on the ground of between 180 and 225 miles. Families, schools and entire communities need your help. Think about the little things that help you get through your day and then think of nothing being there for you the next day. Residents are thankful to simply be alive but now they need our help in recovering. The national media has dropped coverage of this and victims feel they are being forgotten. Let's let them know that our 4-H families still care and wish them the best, even if we can't make it down there to help with the cleanup.

Our 4-Hers will be assembling sets of care packages for the Tuscaloosa, AL tornado victims. Please come promptly at 6:30 and bring whatever supplies you can contribute to this collection. If you do not have time to go shopping and would like to make a financial contribution toward supplies, please email Sandy Arnold at arnoldwebcreations@yahoo.com and she will coordinate with 4-h families who can offer to do the shopping for you before Friday's meeting (bring checks Friday payable to Nokesville 4-H). BEN LOMOND ANTIQUE ROSE GARDEN WILL BE ON DISPLAY AT COLORFUL ROSE PROGRAM

On May 14, 2011, the Prince William County Historic Preservation Division is hosting specialized tours of the Antique Rose Garden at Ben Lomond Historic Site.

The Ben Lomond Rose Garden consists of over 100 varieties of rare and antique roses. It is one of the largest collections of antique roses in the Mid-Atlantic. The gardens, along with the site, recently went through an extensive restoration. Mid-May is the best opportune time to see these roses in bloom. Rosarians and Master Gardeners will be on hand to discuss the roses, planting techniques and to offer advice for your home floral garden.

The program will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until 4pm. The program is free, with a suggested $5 donation to assist with the upkeep with this rare garden. No reservations are required. The program may be cancelled due to inclement weather; please call ahead if weather is forecasted. There will be no house tours offered due to its on-going restoration.

Ben Lomond Historic Site consists of the 1832 plantation home, antique rose garden and several outbuildings, including a rare original slave quarter. Ben Lomond Historic Site is located at 10321 Sudley Manor Dr., Manassas, VA 20109.

The Leader's Guide was developed to help you teach young people and adults about all-terrain vehicle safety. The Guide includes experiential "classroom style" activities. View the contents listing and first chapter sample on the above "Leader Guide Sample Document link.

Since accidents happen to people riding ATVs, riders need to be educated about safe operation of ATVs before they climb on board. Taking risks on a motorized vehicle can lead to death or injury. More than 6,400 ATV-related deaths have occurred since the early 1980s; thousands of people are injured riding ATVs each year.

The Leader's Guide is not intended to be used in place of a certified riding course, such as the one offered by the ATV Safety Institute ( ATV RiderCourseSM).It is intended to be used with audiences that have never ridden ATVs or those that are actively riding and need education regarding safe practices.

How Can This Curriculum Help Keep Riders Safe?

In this Leader's Guide, we focus on safely riding ATVs, helping youth understand that it's normal to be well trained, wear safety gear, ride at appropriate speeds, and avoid risks. Our Leader's Guide emphasizes safety issues while enhancing the abilities of participants to think critically and assess risk more successfully.

The educational messages in this curriculum also are targeted at parents, guardians, and caregivers. Parents care for their children, but may not fully understand the danger inherent in the activities they allow. Adults need to carefully supervise young riders, ensure they are wearing proper safety equipment, and follow other protective measures. Parents and caregivers should not underestimate the risks of riding improperly or overestimate the skills of young riders.

Since our county has been so involved with Japan through the 4-H/Japanese exchange program, our 4-H families have been asking how they could help the people of Japan after the recent disaster. If you are getting some of the same questions, I thought I would pass along a contact if any of your clubs or families wants to send a donation check. One of my 4-H volunteers is Japanese and she has suggested we send the money to the JCAW Foundation. Ducks Unlimited Will Sponsor Teen to Attend Youth Conservation Camp at Virginia Tech

The Prince William Chapter of Ducks Unlimited (DU) is again offering a scholarship to one teen to attend the 35^thAnnual Youth Conservation Camp (YCC) from July 10-16, 2011 on the campus of Virginia Tech. Students in grades 9-12 are eligible. This camp is coordinated by the Virginia Association of Soil and Water Conservation Districts, and made possible with grants and a donation from Virginia Farm Bureau Federation. Prince William Soil & Water Conservation District (PWSWCD) administers the DU scholarship.

“It’s our pleasure to process applications and choose a DU scholarship winner each year to attend YCC at Virginia Tech,” shares Kate Norris, District Manager for PWSWCD. “We can also choose up to two more applicants who are willing to pay their own way,” she added. The fee for the week-long camp is $550.00. DU will pay $500.00 of the scholarship winner’s fee. After the scholarship winner returns, he/she will be asked to share with DU a brief presentation of the experience. According to Norris, “This will be the 28^th year PWSWCD has been involved with this program. Each year the students express what a wonderful time they had connecting with nature and learning about agriculture and forestry.”

In addition to cookouts, volleyball games, and other social activities, the week is filled with classes and field trips on topics like: lake ecology, fisheries management, forestry and wildlife issues, land use planning, soils, agriculture, geology, and water quality issues. The teen campers will have the opportunity to learn about the environment, enjoy the great outdoors, meet new friends, and have fun!

in Advance of National Air Date

‘Welcome to Shelbyville’ mirrors local struggles with demographic changes

The 2010 documentary “Welcome to Shelbyville” will be presented in an advance screening, free and open to the public, on Sunday, March 6 at 2:30 pm in the Verizon Auditorium of George Mason University’s Prince William Campus, 10900 University Boulevard, Manassas.

Permission to show the film is courtesy of the BeCause Foundation and presented by The Immigration & Human Rights Cinema, a joint project of George Mason University’s Prince William Campus University Life and Unity in the Community.

Inspired by the residents of Shelbyville, Tennessee, who pushed past their fears and faced the rapid demographic change in their town, “Welcome to Shelbyville” documents real life events and understandings that helped this community of whites, African Americans, Latinos and Somalis become more welcoming to newcomers – and each other – in a single year.

A facilitated discussion and audience dialogue follows the film.

Kim A. Snyder directed and produced the film with executive production by BeCause Foundation in association with Active Voice. “Welcome to Shelbyville” is a recipient of a 2010 Gucci-Tribeca Documentary Fund grant, an official selection of the US State Department’s 2010 American Documentary Showcase, and will be broadcast nationally on PBS’s Independent Lens in May 2011.

Veterinary Science Program
The 4-H Veterinary Science Program is an educational, career oriented program for young people, ages 13-18 consisting of a series of 3 or 4 one hour sessions to learn about career opportunities in Veterinary Medicine, animal health and safety, and responsible pet ownership. The classes are taught by local veterinarians in their respective clinics or offices at selected times during the month of March. The program is sponsored by Virginia Cooperative Extension in Fairfax County, in cooperation with interested local veterinarians. The registration fee for participating youth is only $5.00. Lights, Camera, Challenge!

National 4-H Council, National 4-H Headquarters, and University of Arizona 4-H Youth Development, invite all 4-H professionals, staff and volunteers to produce their own digital video for front-line educators and volunteers to better implement 4-H science programs. The purpose of this contest is to build a vault of films to show great 4-H facilitation and learning in practice. We seek films that will help others know what inquiry-based learning looks like in real life. As the saying goes--A picture is worth a thousand words.

We are looking for bold, creative, and exciting videos to help educate facilitators about how to implement 4-H science and illustrate inquiry-based learning approaches to helping youth learn and master science content.

Registration is now open for the 2011 Virginia 4-H Outdoor Adventure Leadership Training (OALT).

Training will take place on April 15-17, 2011 at the Holiday Lake 4-H Center in Appomattox, VA.

This annual training is designed for adults and teens (ages 16 +) working with 4-H Outdoor Adventure Programs such as basic outdoor adventure day trips, camping, backpacking, Leave No Trace, etc.

Cost = $70 per person (fee includes meals, lodging, related resource materials, and a Virginia 4-H Outdoor Adventure Leader souvenir).

Embryology Training - March 10!

Hello To Any and All Interested in the 4-H Embryology Project for Your Classroom or Club:

It’s time to think “hatching” again! That means spring is just around the corner…hopefully!

We have the opportunity to order fertile eggs from Brickland Hatchery if your club/classroom would like to participate in the 4-H embryology project. The delivery of the eggs will be to a neighboring 4-H office on April 26th, and we will be glad to pick them up and have them back in our 4-H office in the afternoon for your pick-up. You could then start incubating the eggs that day or the next morning. The eggs are free, but the delivery is not. The cost is about $6.25 per flat which is 2 ½ dozen eggs. Please let me know if you have interest in this project. I need to know how many flats to order. Remember, we can share flats, so let us know how many eggs you would like to incubate. Egg orders are due by the 28^th of March.

We have many resources for the embryology project, and we will share them with you at 4-H Embryology Training on Thursday, March 10 ^th from 5-7PM at the McCourt Building in the Occoquan Room located in Woodbridge. Directions are attached.

Attached you will find a brochure to advertise the upcoming Fifth Annual Statewide Teen Weekend, March 4-6, 2011 at the W.E. Skelton 4-H Educational Conference Center at Smith Mountain Lake in Wirtz, VA. The State 4-H Cabinet has worked hard on planning this event and it promises to be the highlight of the season. This event provides an opportunity for teens across the commonwealth to come together for a weekend filled with educational programs and leadership. This year’s workshops include: Team Building, Wacky Science, Yoga, Healthy Snacks, and Table Etiquette. Participants will also take part in a teen opportunities forum and a service project. I hope you will encourage all of your teen 4-H members to attend this fun filled weekend. Please note that participants must be 14 years of age by September 30, 2011.

Sewing Patterns Available

We have had a recent donation of approximately 50 sewing patterns for all types of crafts and clothing projects. There is a heavy quilting theme in these patterns, as well as many vintage patterns! It’s a really interesting and unique collection! The patterns are at the office and can be looked through, just give us a call and let us know when you will be by: 703-792-4536 or 4761. PWC Recognized as a 100 Best Community for Young People!

Prince William County (PWC) is recognized for the first time as a 100 Best community through its strong promotion of youth development programs focused on physical, social, educational and moral growth. The Healthy Communities Healthy Youth (HC·HY) Council empowers the community to build the 40 Developmental Assets® through educating, communicating, empowering and serving the community. The Office of Student Management and Alternative Programs created several opportunities and paths to finish high school, and, as a result. the dropout rate decreased by 52.8 percent over the last four years. The community also works to develop youth leadership skills through Learn and Serve classes, Leadership classes, and Students L.E.A.D (Learning Essential Assets of Development) committees.

School administrators facilitated students' efforts to create a district-wide committee called Learning Essential Assets of Development (L.E.A.D.). They develop leadership skills through planning, presentations, and decision making of service projects and assist with the annual County Student Leadership Conference. Because of L.E.A.D.'s involvement in human rights issues, the County's Human Rights Commission created a Student Sub-Committee to meet quarterly to educate and inform the Commission. Additionally, the Park Authority uses The First Tee program to successfully implement the nine core values of the program by becoming a mentor to other youth.

Most notable were the combined efforts of local government and businesses to fund construction of two facilities dedicated to youth development. One is a community center/day care facility in the most socio-economically depressed housing area and the other is the largest Boys and Girls Club in Virginia. These two facilities made a positive impact on school attendance, academic performance, and safety in the community. Another successful collaboration -- Comprehensive Child Study (CCS) -- addresses students' poor academic performance caused by issues outside the school. CCS is a partnership of staffs from school and the County's social services, mental health, juvenile probation, and parent education services to solve issues within families.

Boys & Girls Clubs, Scouting, 4-H, fitness clubs, and sports teams provide many of the youth with access to caring adults in a healthy supervised atmosphere. Several coalitions work on specific issues, including the Child Protection Partnership, the Prevention Alliance, and the Gang Response Intervention Team (GRIT). In addition, parents also receive support through Subsidized Parent Education programs, which offer tools on raising healthy children, managing anger, and addressing issues specific to at-risk populations.
